Rubbers burning, sound of explosive thunderous exhaust, smell of race fumes, welcome to Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS). This year AFOS is held on the 28th & 29th of May at Sepang International Circuit and will feature three FIA-sanctioned race series. Round 3 to 6 of the JK Racing Asia series, Round 3 & 4 of the Asian Touring Car series and the Season opener of the GT Asia Series.
JK Tyre & Industries, the leading tyre manufacturer in India, is the title partner for the JK Racing Asia Series. The series is also supported by AirAsia, Asia’s leading low-cost carrier. JK Racing Series is currently the only Junior Formula that provides a unique opportunity where the drivers are given a platform to compete in front of the Formula 1 fraternity. On three occasions the JK Racing Asia Series will support Formula 1 Grand Prix, in Malaysia, Singapore and the newly built circuit in India.
Leading the pack for the JK Racing Asia Series is 18 year old Austrian Lucas Auer or Luggi, with 34 points while Petronas Mofaz Racing driver Nabil Jeffri tails him in second spot with 32 points. Another local driver Mohd Afiq Ikhwan is in third with 30 points.
The other Malaysian set to challenge Auer in Sepang this weekend include this season’s youngest driver Akash Neil Nandy, one of the two female drivers of the competition Natasha Seatter, Aaron Chang and 2010 PFX graduates Irfan IIyas, Freddie Ang and Hiqmar Danial.
Aaron and Hiqmar are fourth and fifth on the leaderboard, while Irfan, Natasha, Freddie and Akash are seventh, eighth, 10th and 12th respectively.
In the Team points, Eurointernational lead the count with 64 points to Petronas Mofaz Racing’s 48, followed by Meritus GP with 37 points. Reigning Formula BMW Team Champion, Eurasia Motorsport lie in fourth with 32 points whilst Atlantic Racing Team collected 9 points.
During the Asian Festival OF Speed, drivers will be faced with an added challenge of competing in four rounds of racing over two days. The weekend will test the durability, fitness and endurance of each driver.
Round 3-6 of the JK Racing Asia Series will be the second outing in Malaysia before the Series travels to Indonesia, China, Singapore and India.
